Abstract   During the 7 year peroid from January 1984 to December 1990, 77 male patients had undergone surgical treatment for thyroid diseases, Capital Armed Forces General Hospital. The results of the clinical analysis were obtained. 1) The age distribution were noted in 56 cases in 3rd decade, 12 cases in the 4th decade and 9 cases in the 5th decade. The peak incidence of cancer were noted in the age of 5th decade (55.5%). 2) The duration of symptoms and signs priar to admission were less than 1 year in 50 cases (64.9%). 3) The chief complaints were lump in the neck in 77 cases (100%), palpitation 25 cases (32.5%), weight loss 23 cases (29.9%), headache 20 cases (30%) and fatigue 15 cases (19.5%) 4) The pathologic findings revealed benign in 53 cases (68.8%) and malignant in 24 cases (31.2%). Benign disease reveaied adenoma in 32 cases (60.4%), adenomatous goiter 14 cases (26.4%), Graves disease in 4 cases (7.5%), Hashimoto's disease in 3 cases (5.7%), while malignant disease revealed papillary carcinoma 19 cases (79.2%), follicular carcinoma in 5 cases (20.8%). 5) The thyroid scannings revealed cald nodule in 63 cases (87.5%), warm nodule 7 cases (9.79), hot nodule 2 cases (2.8%). 6> The location revealed 34 cases in Rt lobe, 32 cases in Lt lobe and 11 cases were bilateral. 7) Thyroid function test by 24 hour P" uptake rate prior to operation reveaied Euthyroidism in 88.3%, hyperthyroidism in 10.4%, hypothyroidism in 2.6%. 8) Most cases of benign disease were treated with lobectomy (73.6%) and lobectomy with isthmectomy (17%). Malignant disease were treated with lobectamy (37.5g), lobectomy with isthmectomy (25%), subtotal thyroidectomy (20.8%), total thyroidectomy 1 case and modified neck dissection was performed in the cases of metastasis to lymph node.. All cases of cancer patients were medicated with thyroid honnone after surgery. For Graves disease subtotal thyroidectomy was performed. 9) Postoperative complications developed in 9 cases (11.7%) including 3 cases of seroma and hematoma, 4 cases of transient hoarseness, 1 cases of recurrent larynzeal nerve paralysis.
